5 Treatments to Restore Lost Facial Volume
If you have looked in the mirror and noticed that your facial features seem thinner or more angular, you are likely experiencing age-related volume loss, which involves the loss of both subcutaneous fat and bone. This can have the overall effect of making you look older than you feel.
If you are looking to achieve a more youthful and refreshed look, cosmetic surgeons and medical injectors offer several effective treatments: facial fat transfer and a variety of dermal fillers.
Facial fat transfer
Facial fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is a long-lasting and completely natural solution, using your own fat to restore volume under the skin. However, this is a surgical procedure that requires a cosmetic surgeon to perform.
The first step of this procedure involves extracting fat from other parts of your body, such as the abdomen or thighs, with liposuction. (This means you will get the added benefits of some body contouring!) Then, we purify the fat before precisely injecting it into facial areas where you would like to see volume enhancement, such as the temples, cheeks, and lips.
Facial fat transfer or fillers can be combined with facelift surgery to not only restore facial volume, but to address loose skin and wrinkles, too.
The results are long-lasting, but we find that about 20-25% of the transferred fat will not survive. Our cosmetic surgeons take this fact into account when injecting and creating your surgical plan, so we may recommend a second procedure to help you get the results you desire after we’ve seen the final results from your first surgery.
Dermal fillers
We offer a range of biocompatible, FDA-approved dermal fillers, which are injected by either a cosmetic surgeon, physician assistant, or nurse. These treatments are distinct from fat transfer because no liposuction is required, and you will have little-to-no downtime after the treatment (some redness and mild swelling is normal). However, fillers do dissolve over the course of months to years, depending on the chosen formula.
RHA Fillers
Duration: 3 months-1 year
RHA Fillers® are a recent advancement in dermal filler technology, composed of RHA (Resilient Hyaluronic Acid) that is designed to naturally adapt to the dynamic movements of the face. We recommend these fillers in areas prone to expression lines, such as around the mouth and cheeks.
Restylane
Duration: 3 months-1 year
Restylane® is a well-known filler that addresses facial wrinkles and folds, particularly around the nose and mouth. It can also be used for lip or cheek enhancement. This hyaluronic acid (HA)-based filler is a popular choice; HA works by both filling the skin and attracting water to increase hydration. While it can last up to a year, more mobile areas like the lips may need more frequent touch-ups initially.
Sculptra
Duration: Up to 2 years+
Sculptra® stands out from other fillers by not just providing immediate results but also improving those results over time. It works by stimulating your body’s own collagen production, gradually increasing facial volume. Thus, it is particularly effective for deep lines, creases, and more advanced facial hollowing. We recommend Sculptra for patients looking for long-term, natural-looking improvements.
Radiesse
Duration: 1 year
Radiesse® acts as a scaffold under the skin, both providing structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. Radiesse is typically used for deeper facial lines and can also enhance cheekbones and jawlines, providing a more defined facial contour. It is a long-lasting formula for patients who have had filler before or who are looking to commit to their results.
