Liposuction (Lipoplasty)

Liposuction in Cincinnati is one of the best options to consider if you want a shapelier body. First developed in France in 1970, it has become one of the most popular procedures in plastic surgery. Body liposuction is the most requested cosmetic procedure in the United States today. It benefits individuals who have tried to lose weight through diet and exercise, but who have failed to slim down certain areas of the body such as the thighs, tummy, buttocks, and arms.

By targeting these problem areas of fat, this procedure makes it possible to achieve your desired slimmer body. Although the procedure is heralded for its success in getting rid of unwanted fat, it is not considered a weight loss solution. It cannot remove all excess fat from the body, nor is it a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise.

Liposuction has changed considerably over the last forty years. Among the many liposuction methods being practiced today are the following:

  • Traditional
  • Tumescent
  • Laser-Assisted – SmartLipo
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction – VASER Lipo

What are the Different Liposuction Techniques?

Traditional liposuction

Traditional liposuction is conducted using a small cannula attached to a vacuuming device. The cannula is inserted into stubborn fat deposits through small incisions and is used to dislodge and suction out the fat. During the healing process, the overlying skin shrinks, and a new body contour is revealed.

Tumescent liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is regarded as an improved technique that allows for reduced recovery time and enhanced comfort. During the procedure, both an anesthetic agent (lidocaine) and a blood vessel constrictor (epinephrine) are injected into the treatment areas through the cannulas. This anesthetizing solution often eliminates the need for general anesthesia or other sedatives. Furthermore, the procedure causes less bleeding than traditional liposuction, which also means less swelling and a chance of infection.

Vaser liposuction

A relatively new liposuction tool, VASER, uses UAL (Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction) that was popular about 10 years ago. With this technique, tiny probes allow the technician to strategically deliver ultrasonic energy in the form of acoustic streaming to specific areas, dislodging fat cells.

Laser-assisted liposuction

Laser-assisted liposuction is another increasingly popular form of this procedure. Examples include SmartLipo, Cool Lipo, and Slim Lipo. With a single laser fiber that is inserted into the target areas through a small cannula, the laser liposuction tool both melts fat and tightens surrounding tissue.

Which Liposuction Approach is Best for Me?

At the Mandell-Brown Plastic Surgery Center, we recommend tumescent liposuction because these methods produce the best and most predictable results. Above all, we value the importance of learning how we can help our patients achieve their goals for cosmetic surgery in a way that will benefit them optimally.

Ideal Candidates for Liposuction

If you want to get rid of stubborn fat around areas like the arms, waist, hips, or thighs, you may be an ideal candidate for liposuction. You have to be close to your ideal weight, must have a high degree of skin elasticity, and must have good muscle tone. Ideally, it would be best if you were a non-smoker. It is important that you are in good overall health.

This procedure aims to reshape and improve the contours of your body. It is not a solution for weight loss, cellulite, or stretch marks. If you are overweight, you might need to work on shedding some pounds first before undergoing the procedure. You may not be recommended for this treatment if you have chronic health problems.

Additionally, if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, Dr. Mandell-Brown will likely recommend waiting until your family is complete to perform liposuction. Body weight significantly fluctuates during pregnancy, which can compromise the results of this procedure.

How to Prepare for Liposuction Surgery

If you are cleared for liposuction, you’ll be given critical pre-surgical instructions that need to be followed. Patients who take aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications are required to stop taking them or reduce the dosage, as directed, for a 10 to 14-day period.

In the weeks leading up to your procedure, maintain a healthy weight through exercise and a nutritious diet. Also, plan for your recovery period ahead of time by stocking up on easy-to-prepare, healthy foods and hydrating beverages, as well as arranging for a friend or family member to assist you around the house for the first day or two after your procedure.

The Procedure

The first step in a liposuction procedure is the administration of anesthesia. The type of anesthesia chosen will depend on the extent of work that needs to be done. Markings will be made on the parts of the body that will be treated.

There are slight differences in the liposuction process depending on the specific technique used. However, in general, a thin tube called a cannula will be inserted into the target area through tiny incisions. A careful back-and-forth motion is used to break up the fat deposits, and then a medical vacuuming device is attached to the tube to suction out the fat to achieve the desired results. Once complete, Dr. Mandell-Brown will carefully close the incisions.

The Recovery Process

After your liposuction procedure, you may not need to stay in the hospital or facility. When it’s time to go home, you’ll need someone to drive you. You may be required to wear a compression garment to reduce swelling. In a minority of cases, small tubes might be left in the incisions to allow excess fluid to drain.

Bruising and numbness are commonly experienced but should disappear after a few days. Pain can be managed with over-the-counter medications, and antibiotics will be prescribed to prevent infection.

Results can be noticed once the swelling and inflammation subside. Some patients are able to go back to work after several days. Depending on factors like your body’s natural healing response, you may be able to go back to your normal routine after several weeks. Dr. Mandell-Brown may want to schedule a follow-up office visit to assess your healing progress.

Cost of Liposuction Surgery

The cost of this procedure varies from patient to patient since it depends on the extent of work done and the number of areas targeted. The overall price will be impacted by the anesthetic fees and surgical fees.
